76.

I pitched another of Vincent’s ideas, but the men were so excited about Grocery Store that they didn’t care. My second pitch was a parody of sitcoms called Situation Comedy. It featured several innovations, my favorite being its unique laugh track. Instead of having an entire audience laugh, the laugh track on Situation Comedy would consist of one man with an obnoxious chuckle. Also, the set would have a fourth wall on the pilot, but through a contrived mishap, this fourth wall falls. In subsequent episodes, viewers would still see the wall lying in ruins on the front lawn.

The men failed to see the humor in this.

“Let’s just focus our energy on Grocery Store for now, and if it goes over, we’ll take it from there,” said the leader.

After another meeting was scheduled for the following week, Sylvain and I were dismissed. Until then, the contracts would be drawn.

“Looks like we just sold one big hour-long commercial,” I said to Sylvain on the elevator.

“Yeah, well, at least we sold it. And it sounds like they’re gonna give it a big push.”

“We can’t let them do this to Vincent’s show.”

Sylvain said nothing. We walked off the elevator and into the humongous lobby with its black-and-white marble floors and walls.

“Don’t you agree!?” I yelled.

“Agree about what?”

“That we can’t let them do that to Vincent’s show.”

“Sure I agree. I’ll talk to Prormps about it.”

“Screw Prormps. I don’t even think he’s on our side.”

Sylvain shrugged his shoulders as we left the building. He lit a cigarette as soon as his dress shoes touched the sidewalk.

“Then again, I doubt Lipowitz would stand for this,” I said. “You should talk to Prormps about it so maybe he’ll talk to Lipowitz. I guess Lipowitz is our only hope.”

“Whatever. I’m on it.” Sylvain was going to limp off without saying good-bye.

“Wait,” I said. “Would you want to do something tonight? Maybe go over some of Vincent’s other TV ideas?”

“Can’t do it. I’m meeting with a guy. Sorry.”

“Oh. I guess you’re meeting up with your coke dealer.”

“Shut the fuck up.”

“I’m right, aren’t I? You’re back on drugs. I know you’ve been acting funny.”

“Don’t tell Lipowitz, or I’ll kill you.”

“Okay, Steven Sylvain of Blood Lust fame. Don’t worry. It’s not like I’ll ever even talk to Lipowitz. How’s he doing, anyhow?”

“He’s okay for now, I think. Heard he’s been in remission for a while. I gotta go, man. I’m sorry. I’ll see you at the meeting or whatever. Laters.”

Since there was nothing else to do, I called Sylvain the next day to talk to him about his drug problem. He said his relapse could be traced back to Chad. Upon Lipowitz’s insistence, Sylvain checked in on Chad’s recording sessions from time to time as a measure of quality control. At the recording studio, Chad had little trouble in enticing Sylvain. Chad thought “it would be cool to get messed up with Johnny Lane from Blood Lust.”

Sylvain claimed that initially his problem was under control and that the only time he used was at the studio with Chad.
